Electoral district of Unley
Unley is an electoral district of the House of Assembly in the Australian state of South Australia. Named after the suburb of the same name, it is a 12.2 km² urban electorate in Adelaide's inner southern suburbs, taking in the suburbs of Eastwood, Frewville, Fullarton, Glenunga, Highgate, Hyde Park, Kings Park, Malvern, Myrtle Bank, Parkside, Unley, Unley Park as well as parts of Glen Osmond, Goodwood, Millswood and Wayville.
Unley was created in 1938 as a conservative seat. It was first contested at the 1938 state election, where it was held by conservatives until 1962, when Gil Langley captured the seat for the Australian Labor Party. He was replaced by Kym Mayes in 1982, a state government minister, until the 1993 election where he was swept away in a Liberal landslide by Liberal member Mark Brindal. Brindal, a minister in the government of John Olsen, relinquished preselection of Unley prior to the 2006 state election, contesting instead the electoral district of Adelaide held by the then Minister for Education, Jane Lomax Smith. Despite a Labor landslide, David Pisoni narrowly won despite a challenge from Labor's Michael Keenan, Unley's mayor, which could be due to the recent redistribution which saw the electorate take in more of the east in Bragg and less of the west in Ashford.[1][2]
